E-mails Oct. 7, 2008 (Conf. Weekend)

Dad (Sunday 10/5):
Hi Cam,

Hope you’re having a great conference weekend. Were you able to view or listen to any sessions? I hope so. Priesthood meeting was great last night… it energized me. I’m so proud of Taylor. Even though he had a basketball tournament game to play at 5PM, he told the team he wouldn’t be able to play. This was all done without me saying anything to him. Thank you for setting the example to your brothers and sisters and showing them early on that church, mutual, seminary, the temple, service projects etc. etc, etc. is where they should find themselves standing…. Or sitting. It’s where they should be :)

I hope this map of Uburaba comes through in the email. If you can see it below, can you confirm that this is where you live approximately? Do you attend the Boa Vista ward that I’ve marked with a pin?

Can’t wait ‘til Tuesday.

Cam (Tue. 10/7)
Hi Dad,
Yep! haha that´s my house. The church is in a nice 2 story house, and we live really close so it is nice. The better map you sent me did not function... it is a file format that the LAN house here does not recognise so I can´t open it. How are you guys doing?

Tamara:
Hi Cameron! How are you today? Did you have a good week? Did you enjoy conference? I particularly enjoyed hearing from the Brazilian speakers. They made me think of you and the marvelous work that you are a part of. Saturday was a little melancholy for me as I remembered that a year ago you and I were in Utah and were able to sit in the Conference Center together. It brought back sweet memories of that week in Utah and I am so grateful for that time we had to spend together. I enjoyed laughing and singing in the car with you on the drive down. I also was reminded of the Spirit that we felt while in the Conference Center and the privilege we had to be in those sessions while President Hinckley was still alive. That truly was a wonderful time and I hope you look back fondly on that time as well. I know I have said this many times before but I feel so blessed that you are my son and for the joy you bring into my life. Your positive outlook on life is something I have always admired and I am thankful for your example of optimism. You are a valiant son of God and so proud of you for the life you have lived and the example you continue to be for me and many others. I love you so much!

We are all doing well. Not too much new to report. Our weekend was much like the last few weekends-soccer, soccer, soccer and thankfully Conference.

Well Cameron, I hope you have had a good week. I can't wait to hear from you!

Cam:
I just realized now that we went to President Hinckleys last conference while he was living, I really miss him. But President Thomas S. Monson is amazing, I was able to watch all of the sessions and they were awesome. I don´t know if I will receive the conf. Ensign or not so could you guys send me one the next time you get a chance? no worries though. We had a good week, It is weird that we are already at the end of a transfer and my companion might be leaving to be a zone leader, one of the zone leaders keeps telling me I am going to be the district leader, but I know he doesn´t really know anything about that. It would be weird though. I don´t know if I am ready for that so I am not even going to think about it. Lots of soccer huh? I don´t even know if I ever missed any conference sessions, but I hope not. I have actually come to a better realization that if we´re not there (at conf.) we are not hearing Gods guidance for us, it´s like if nobody went to hear King Benjamin on the Tower; if God is going to tell us something grand... that is where we will hear it. Anyway, how are you all, doing well? healthy? I hope so, is everybody happy?
Well I have a surprise for you guys just so you know.

Tamara: Okay.....WHAT'S THE SURPRISE?!?!?!?!?!
Cam: I don´t think you´re ready for it.

Dad: You're killing me Small's!

Cam: yeah I know haha. (He then sent the picture to right)

Dad: Way cool! Congrats to all of you! Please tell us everything about these newest members of the church!

Cam: Well the tall one is the bishop, but the little one is the brother that got baptised, his name is E____. He is really really smart and he lives really far away from the church, but we know that no matter what he will stay strong in the church. He knows so much about the gospel and it is actually really hard to teach him because he talks so much and has so many questions but most of it is about unnecessary doctrine. His major challenge was that he wanted to know eeeevvverrryttthing before baptism. But the lord finally helped him understand that everything is only something that God himself knows, and he needs to go forward with faith. now he is just sad because he knows that we the missionaries will not always be there for him. He really wants to help with missionary work and help people change their lives. He is also sad that his time to serve a mission has come and gone, but the promise of a bright future makes him happy. Also don´t put too much information about him on the Internet, just leave it at his name.

The other missionaries met him just before I got here, but we were there for most of the teaching. He can serve as a ward missionary for sure. Our other investigators are doing well. We have one that is great, but she has difficulties getting work of to go to church, but the thing that is different about her is that she really really wants to be there, but she can´t afford to lose her job. We are going to talk with the stake about a job for her in the church. Reactivation is going well we are working a lot with young men that need to be going on missions right now so that they can help the missionary effort, also the young men are a great example to family members and other young men when they go on missions, so things are going really well.

It feels great to be able to help the Lord with this work. I love reading Joseph Smith saying that nothing will stop this work going forward, the only thing people can do is prolong it. Alright well I have to get going, I love you all very much, I am glad that picture made you happy. Be good, and keep smiling always, just like we learned in conference, just laugh. I love you all very much, and I know that we are all able to receive many blessings, but we need to be ready to receive them. It´s like taking a warm shower, you don´t feel the warmth if you don´t stand under the stream.

I love you all!
Love,
Elder Summerhays
